Since 2003, the Salt Spring Island Residents for Responsible
Land Use (SSIRRLU) have lobbied to protect the heritage site
and sensitive ecosystems at Walker Hook from desecration and
industrialization. The beautiful shell beach and adjoining
"hook" have long been a popular attraction to both locals
and visitors seeking unspoiled beauty, relaxation and solitude.
To First Nations people Walker Hook has been a home, a gathering,
hunting and harvesting place and a place to honour and visit
the spirits of their ancestors who have been buried there
for millennia. In spite of the natural beauty, sacred values
and the fine balance of this sensitive ecosystem, poor fisheries
management has led to the misuse of this area.
